    Dans l'usinage traditionnel, un machiniste qualifié exploite une machine, enlevant ou formant du métal. Ceci est fait selon les spécifications fournies par les concepteurs et les ingénieurs, généralement à travers un dessin ou un plan d'ingénierie. Ils utilisent des roues tournantes, des cadrans, des interrupteurs, des pinces, des vices et une variété d'outils de coupe en acier trempé, en carbure et en diamant industriel, puis utilisent des instruments de mesure pour s'assurer que toutes les dimensions sont correctes.

    L'usinage CNC effectue la même fonction que l'usinage traditionnel - découpe de métaux, forage, fraisage, alésage, broyage et autres fonctions de formage et d'enlèvement de métaux - mais les machines CNC utilisent le contrôle numérique par ordinateur plutôt que le contrôle manuel par un machiniste. Il est automatisé, piloté par le code et développé par des programmeurs. Il est à peu près aussi précis la première coupe que la 500ème. Largement utilisé dans la fabrication numérique (et parfois dans des séries de production de faible volume), il peut être révisé et modifié pour des modifications et différents matériaux.

    Ce type d'usinage est beaucoup plus précis et a remplacé l'usinage traditionnel (bien que pas entièrement) dans la fabrication, la fabrication et la production industrielle. Il utilise des coordonnées mathématiques et de la puissance de calcul pour atteindre le même but avec la plus grande précision. Plus précisément, le contrôle numérique par ordinateur utilise des coordonnées cartésiennes. Ce sont des coordonnées spatiales - dans plusieurs dimensions - utilisant des coordonnées et des axes. L'automatisation des machines-outils de coupe contrôle sa coupe, son alésage, son perçage ou toute autre opération à l'aide du contrôle numérique d'un ordinateur qui lit les coordonnées. Ces coordonnées ont été désignées par les ingénieurs dans le dessin et la conception numériques du produit.
